Late Mr. D. L. Shah, the founder of D. L. SHAH TRUST FOR APPLIED SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ARTS & PHILOSOPHY, was born on 13th June 1907.

“D.L.SHAH TRUST FOR APPLIED SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ARTS & PHILOSOPHY”

was established in 1994, by Late Dahyabhai Lallubhai Shah, a visionary, well known industrialist, and philanthropist. His passionate desire was that the “ Trust works towards introducing systems, methods, mechanisms and practices to better the over-all QUALITY of life in India”.
Mr. D.L.Shah was a great visionary, a well-known industrialist, & a noted
philanthropist. He was known as the doyen of “Indian Quality movement”.

He made a tremendous contribution to the Indian Industry in general and the Machine Tool Industry in particular.

He started Perfect Machine Tools company popularly known as “PMT”, and represented several European manufacturers of machine tools. In mid-1950’s he started representing Traub of Germany, and in early 1960’s, the Group entered into collaboration with Traub for manufacturing their machines in India. Thereafter, the group entered into several other collaborations with European manufacturers for manufacturing various machine tools, and enhanced its contribution to the Indian Industry. For many years, Mr. D.L. Shah held the post of President of the Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers Association and Machine Tools Marketing Association of India.

Mr. D.L. Shah believed in ‘Quality as a philosophy ’ in all spheres of life. He promoted world-class quality culture in the country and envisioned that ‘Made in India’ should be ‘synonym’ with Quality respected world over. He worked tirelessly & determinedly towards this objective. Along with other reputed industrialists, he initiated the formation of National Centre of Quality Management (NCQM). He was instrumental in setting up the CMTI-PMT Trust, for promoting research & development in the field of machine tools, manufacturing technologies and to encourage design talent in this field. For the past number of years, the CMTI-PMT Trust’s Award is awarded in every IMTEX exhibition, and is considered to be very prestigious. Mr.D.L.Shah organized the setting up of the ‘PMT Centre for Quality Management’ at Bhagubhai Mafatlal Technical Institute at Vile Parle, Mumbai. Through D.L. Shah Trust, founded & run by him till his demise, he published & distributed free-of-charge a number of books on Quality, Productivity & ISO. CMTI-PMT Trust’s Awards are also supported financially by D.L. Shah Trust.

National & International Honors for Mr. D.L. Shah :

• Gold Insignia & Citation (highest award given to a Foreigner) of Govt. of Poland for promotion of Indo-Polish trade.

• Austrian Award, given by the Austrian Govt., for promoting Austrian business in India.

• Quimpro Platinum Standards Award for Quality Management.

• Shiromani Award, conferred by the Shiromani Institute.

• ‘Bajaj Auto Outstanding Quality Award’, bestowed by NCQM, which was presented by Mr R. Venkataraman, Former President of India.

• The ‘Ambassador for Quality in India’ Award , of the American Society for Quality Control . This was presented by the U.S. Consul General.

• IMC’s ‘Juran Quality Medal’. This was presented by the Prime Minister of India.

Mr. D.L. Shah was also a well-known philanthropist. He was a generous donor during his lifetime. He also bequeathed his property to the ‘D. L. Shah Trust’ in order to continue his mission for a better India in all walks of life. He passed away in 1999. The Trust founded by him continues the laudable work started under his patronage.

D L Shah Trust has published a number of books on Quality, Productivity & ISO, Standards on Quality, and distributes them free-of-charge to organizations, institutions and professionals. Over the years, thousands of copies of such books have been distributed, and form a valued trove of reference for the recipients. DL Shah Trust also provides financial assistance / donations to several NGOs and other institutions, working selflessly in various social causes.
